By Brian Richard Miramichi---Dr.Paula Keating is going back to the ING New York Marathon, the home of her first marathon, but this time she has been invited to take part in the top women field section of the race. The elite portion of the race is reserved to the top 40-50 female runners in the world. There are 46 listed in the ING program and Paula is one of them. “I felt this was an opportunity to good to pass up”, said Keating this week. Paula will be rubbing shoulders with the top 50 runners in the world and will be bused to the starting line and enjoy the comfort of a special tent reserved for the top runners. The marathon runs through the streets of New York's five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. The course challenges thousands of athletes every year and is a model for big-city marathon courses around the world. The New York City marathon is where her 26.2mile career started in November 2009 when she ran her first marathons. It was a big one as well setting a New Brunswick record in 2:58.01. This was the first time a female runner ran under the magic three-hour barrier in the province. Since then Paula has put another four marathons under her belt, running a new record in three of them. Boston in 2010 was a 2:57.53 time then came Detroit in the fall of 2010,which she won, in another record time of 2:52.14. Her present record of 2:47.26 came this April in Boston and then it was back to Detroit with a 2:48.53. It will be only three weeks between Detroit until she lines up in New York on November 6th. “I’m going there just to enjoy the run with no big expectations. I’m a bit nervous it’s so close to Detroit but I can’t pass it up, and will enjoy the thrill,” she said. “I registered for the New York marathon away back as more or less a birthday gift to our son Andrew who is turning 14 on November 6 as well”. He will be going to New York with his mom and dad (Greg Savoy) to witness her fifth marathon. Paula is the record holder in New Brunswick over three distances, the 8km (5 miles) with a time of 29.27, the only female runner to break under the 30 minute standard. The 15km (9miles) with a time of 57:03 set in Grande-Digue and the marathon (26.2 miles) with a time of 2:47.26 set this April in Boston. Dr. Keating has been competing in road racing for over six years now and has a 5:17 mile to her credit, a 17:23 5km time, a 10km time of 36:30 and a half marathon time of 1:21:26. “I enjoy both the half and full marathon distances. I like the strategy of the longer races, as well as the training. I feel most comfortable and strongest at these distances, particularly the marathon. I seem to be able to maintain a steady pace for a sustained period of time, she said in an interview. “I enjoy the tremendous sense of accomplishment that running a good marathon brings”, said Keating. Paula trains 4-5 days per week of running various types of runs, 1-2 days of cross training and at least one rest day every week. At age 45 she may need a days rest now and then. |
