Demi-marathon de l’Acadie returns July 2

TRACADIE-SHEILA, N.B. – Runners here may want to keep their Canada Day celebrations under control this year. The 357e Demi-marathon de l’Acadie will take place on Sunday, July 2.

The monthly half marathon will kick off at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, a new earlier start time they are trying for the summer months.

“It’s a long weekend, so I don’t know what it will be like,” said race director Donald Wade. “Normally we should have around 30-some runners in July, it’s been like that for the past five years.”

Held on the first Saturday of each month, the St-Isidore-Tracadie race almost always coincides with the Canada Day long weekend.

Last year’s July run saw 33 participants, a consistent number with other recent years, according to Wade.

“You never know, sometimes people come home on vacation and we have people from other provinces, so it’s kind of fun,” he said.

And while the heat of summer might scare some runners away from the 21K distance, that wasn’t the case last weekend, when more than 40 took part in the half marathon at the Miramichi Rock ‘N Run, which took place on a noticeably hot day.

That run started at 8 a.m., Wade pointed out.

“We start at 9, and still have to deal with that 11 o’clock sun,” he said. “That’s always a challenge.”

Wade expects to see their regular crowd of runners turn out on Sunday, and hopefully a few more.
