Brian Richard to Be Inducted into the RunNB Hall of Fame
September 18th, 2019

Brian Richard’s running career began in 1964 on the track at Harkins High School as both a sprinter and distance runner. Brian continued running and was  the founding organizer of the Miramichi River Runners in 1984. If asked, Brian will proudly educate you that he won the first ever Miramichi River Runner race on January 1, 1984. He ran this 5km in 18:14 and following his instructions, Brian’s wife Vicky snapped a picture of the first person coming across the line. Brian ran 204 River Runner races before a hip replacement sidelined his running, however he has officiated almost every race since.

Brian was President of the Miramichi River Runners from 1984 to 2014 for a total of 30 years. He is still active with the club as Web Master, compiling the race results for over 656 races and volunteering on race days. Brian was made club President-For-Life in 2014, a title he holds in great regard.

In 1985 Brian joined RunNB and for three years compiled the Super Series results long before the advent of computers and emails. From 2008 to 2015 Brian served on the RunNB Executive and was President for over 2.5 years. Highlights for Brian during this time were the merging of the ANB and RunNB executive director and getting more runners to join the Executive.

Brian’s involvement in sport does not only extend to running, but into numerous other areas including: Baseball as a player, organizer, statistician at both the local and provincial level including being the league President and Vice President for the NB Senior league. Not wanting to sit on the sidelines Brian has been active in Basketball, Hockey and Softball as and both a player and organizer.

Brian was the Sports Editor of the Miramichi Leader Newspaper for 1973 to 1986 and sat on the NB Sports Hall of Fame selection committee from 2009-2016 and was inducted into the Miramichi Sports Wall of Fame in 2011 as a Builder. Brian has been a member of the Miramichi Rock ‘n Run for over 13 years and was the Race Director from 1974-1986 for the Miramichi Jaycee 10k and Mile Provincial Championship.

Brian has been involved in running for over 45 years and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Every race could use a “Brian” and Vicky needs him out of the house, so the running community in New Brunswick has nothing to worry about.
