MIRAMICHI, N.B. – There are many ways to experience the Miramichi River, but this weekend the best way will be to run it.
The 15th annual Miramichi Rock ‘n Run will take place on Sunday, June 25, and organizers are expecting to have more than 300 take part.
“It basically got started with one of the local police officers here, who decided they would do a run around the river,” said Valerie Comeau, who serves as co-chair of the race planning committee along with Ralph Williston. “It just kind of got a little more organized and a bit bigger each year.”

Offering a half marathon, 10K and 5K, the event also includes the Mango Go for 42, a 2.2K walk/run for kids.
Whether it’s the live music, the memorable course that includes a trip over the iconic Centennial Bridge, or the prize money offered for the top three finishers for each gender in each distance, the event is popular among runners, with elite racers like Laura Dickinson and Ryan O’Shea naming it their favourite Maritime race of the year.
“We try to get people out to the course and cheer people on,” said Comeau. “Our water station people are pretty vibrant, and we encourage them to make as much noise as they can, and we have a couple people come out and entertain, like one young man who brings his keyboard and sings along the route.”
The rock ‘n run is also a featured race on the Run New Brunswick Super Series, serving as the provincial championship for the 10K.
Aside from the Centennial Bridge section, which includes a fairly sharp incline over the river, Comeau described the route as quite flat.
Despite the event’s popularity, Comeau said registration numbers are down a bit this year, although she is hoping the favourable weather forecast for Sunday will help bring in a few more participants.
In past years, proceeds from the event have been donated to programs like Roots of Empathy, the local cross-country skiing club, the food bank and more.
“This year we don’t have money earmarked for anything specific just yet,” she explained. “Usually, we wait to see how we do with registrations and stuff. We definitely try to give back, but we also keep our fees down as well.”
