Success as Fredericton Marathon Returns to Mother’s Day Weekend

FREDERICTON (RUNNB) – A new race record, a new Canadian Masters record and a new event capped off the 44th annual Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon this past weekend.

Stanley Chaisson, of Charlottetown, PE, shaved off close to four minutes off his own men’s marathon record, finishing the 42.2k event in 2:25:22, beating the record previously he set last September. Benjamin Rombaut, of Rothesay, NB, came second at 2:51:26 and Albert Wade Were, of Dartmouth, NS placed third at a time of 2:52:14

Christine Little, co-race director, Stanley Chaisson, of Charlottetown PEI, winner of the marathon event and Bruce Macfarlane, co-race director.

Paula Keating, of Miramichi, NB, smashed a Canadian Masters record at the event’s first-ever 8k race Saturday, finishing first with a time of 30:55 for a new national age group record for women 55. The previous record of 32:50 dates to 1993. Saturday’s 8k event was the first time the Fredericton Marathon committee held such an 8k event. Steve Dohaney, of Fredericton, NB placed second at 31:40 followed by third-place Joe Culligan, of Quispamsis, NB, with a time of 35:00.

Donald Evans, of Oromocto, NB finished first in Saturday’s 5k with a time of 17:35. Julia Reid, of Fredericton, NB placed second with a time of 19:11 before Rock Francoeur, of Moncton, NB, crossed the finish line at 19:23.

In Sunday’s marathon, Jennie Orr, of Stanley Bridge, PE, was the first female to cross the finish line with a time of 3:00:32. followed by Leah Gouthro, of Hammonds Plain, NS, 3:07:26 then Katie Robinson, of Canaan, NS at 3:07:26.

In Sunday’s half marathon, Michael Bergeron, of Stanley Bridge, PE claimed first place with a finishing time of 1:14. Evan Arseneault, of Quispamsis, NB, placed second 44 seconds later followed by Kevin Seely of Halifax, NS Catherine Thompson, of Blenheim, ON., was the first female to cross the finish line at 1:19;47 followed by Mary Bartlett, of Fredericton NB, at 1:29:24 then Isabelle Turner of Oromocto, NB at 1:29:54

In the 10k event, also held on Sunday, Mustafa Izzeldin, of Halifax, NS, placed first followed by Paula James, of Windsor, NS and third-place Scott Lee of Baxters Corner, NB

Approximately 200 children participated in the Youth Fun Run on Saturday.

The 45th annual Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon is set for May 12-14, 2023.
