New record, course and race highlight the Fredericton Marathon

FREDERICTON (RUNNB) – The Fredericton Marathon set a record, introduced a new marathon course and an Elite 5k race as well as hosting the provincial 10k championships at the 47th annual Stewart McKelvey Fredericton race weekend.

Marathoners, half marathoners, 10k runners hit Fredericton’s trail and bridges Sunday with 5k participants and children of all ages braving Saturday’s downpour to set a new record with a total of 3,234 registered participants.

The Fredericton Marathon hosted the 2025 RunNB open 10k championships Sunday. Saint John’s Cody Cooper won the men’s title with Evan Arsenault, of Quispamsis, placing second and Fredericton’s Justin Young coming third claimed in the RunNB men’s 10k championship. Julia Reid-Howell, of Fredericton, claimed the women’s title. Sydney Beres, of Calgary, Alta., placed second and Samantha Legge, of Rusagonis, came third.

The 2025 Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon introduced a new course to 42.2k marathoners, utilizing the city’s northside trail. The event also presented elite running to Atlantic Canada, hosting a Road Race label event with the eVisitNB 5k race. Thirty-nine Elite women and men ran two loops of the city’s downtown core in Saturday’s race in Elite 5k, the only race east of Quebec City part of the 2025 Athletics Canada Road Race Label program. 

Mike Tate, of London On., cross the finish line with a time of 14:28, one second faster than Lee Wesselius, of Russell, On., followed by Hudson Grimshaw-Surette, of Central Chebogue, N.S.,

In the women’s category, Eileen Benoit, of Sweets Corner, N.S., edged Katie Richard, of Charlottetown, PEI, at the finish line to claim top spot with Miramichi’s Meghan Duffy right behind for third place. The Open 5k race used the same downtown route.
