Rescheduling of Medavie Moncton Running Festival and 5K National Road Race to Sept. 2021 and Sept. 2022
April 14th, 2020

Athletics New Brunswick (ANB) and its partners including Athletics Canada have made the decision to reschedule the 2020 hosting of the Medavie Moncton Running Festival including the National 5K Road Running championship, until September 2021.

“Following discussions with Athletics Canada and our organizing partners, and as a result of the  impossibility of carrying out planned preparations over this difficult period plus the significant uncertainties in ensuring a safe hosting environment this upcoming September, we have decided to reschedule these events by one year”, states Running Festival Chair Mary Brosnan. “We will therefore reconvene at September 10-12th of 2021 and again the following year at September 9-11th 2022 under the same format including the National 5k Road Race Championships”.

“Athletics New Brunswick and its partner RunNB are certainly chagrinned to delay our hosting, though the security of our volunteers and all participants is paramount”, adds ANB president Marc Lalonde. “We are certainly most grateful to our two lead funders in Medavie and in the City of Moncton, whose support will be invaluable as we plan out the 2021 Running Festival. In fact, it may well be one of the first sporting events in our region that will reengage us all into outdoor active living, at least that is certainly the hope.”

Meanwhile the Greater Moncton Running Club, the host of the Resurgo marathon, will delay its decision until this summer on whether to host its marathon presently set for Saturday morning of September 12th, 2020. “Going into our 3rd year of hosting Resurgo and having already our volunteer base ready to assist, we can delay making a decision at this point”, states Resurgo’s meet director Lindsay Laltoo. “We certainly understand the wise decision made by the Running Festival’s organizers”, she adds, “and our plan is to evaluate the possibility of hosting in a few months from now including adding back the half marathon option should we feel the demand”.

The 2021 Medavie Moncton Running Festival encompasses three days of activities, including the Resurgo half/full marathon along the Petitcodiac trail system and the running of  the National 5k Road Races for Canada’s elites and for all master category runners plus a 1km fun run for youth, with the proposed courses and event staging around the Medavie Blue Cross head office and along Assomption boulevard.
